Jim Martingale and Pete

I played soccer with Pete on the much storied Kingwood Flyers; a real cinderalla story of a team replete scrappy "badnews bears" type kids who took it all the way to Tampa. I remember fondly (and at times unclearly, if you take my meaning) our UK and Netherlands tour where we showed those old worlders how it's done. After 10th grade (his 11th) I moved back up to New Jersey, but in the late 80s coaching Pete invited me to co-coach a summer youth soccer camp he started up in Forest Cove. We were 19 or 20 years old and having a great time showing the little kids how to play the beautiful game. As it goes you lose touch as time goes by, but about 4 or 5 years ago Pete reached out to me and re-kindled our friendship. He came to visit me at my house in NJ and hung out with me and my wife, 2 boys, dog and cat. After that we'd get together about once a year when I had to go to Houston for business. This summer he came to visit us again on his Northeast roadtrip, this time with his lovely daughter Bella. I knew Pete was suffering when he was with us this summer and I am so very saddened by this news of his death, I will miss him very much and keep him always in my thoughts. My deepest condolences to you Karen and Mrs. Sluyter and Stephanie and Bella and Bianca.
